DR. FAHRNEY BOTTLES
The Fahrney family produced many medicinal products in Maryland and Pennsylvania. The family history in America began with Jacob Fahrney (1733-1769) an immigrant from Frankfurt Germany. He settled in the Lancaster PA area with other German Americans. Jacob brought with him formulas for old family secret remedies from the Swiss Alps. Jacob's son Dr Peter Fahrney (1767-1837) carried on the family medicine tradition. Of Dr Peter's children, 2 son's , Jacob and Daniel carried on the medical tradition. The Fahrneys had many descendants (many with the same names making the family tree complicated). Many of the descendants were involved in the patent medicine business. This web page will cover a few of the Fahrney medicines.
Dr Daniel Peter Fahrney (1841-1905)
Son of Daniel Fahrney (1819-1867) and Amy Wenty
Grandson of Peter Fahrney (1767-1837) and Ann Sartoris
Daniel Fahrney started producing medicines in Boonsboro MD probably sometime after the Civil War. In Boonsboro he manufactured his Blood Cleanser and German Liniment. He later moved to the larger city of Hagerstown. His most popular medicines in Hagerstown were his Heath Restorer and Teething Syrup. Dr Daniel Fahrney's bottles were normally embossed Drs D Fahrney & Son. This may have referred to him and his father.
Dr Peter Fahrney (1840-1905)
Son of Jacob Fahrney (1798-1848) and Elizabeth Holsinger
Born in Quincy, Pa. Feb 22, 1840 Peter Fahrney was probably the most successful medicine producer of the family. He built a huge patent medicine company after moving to Chicago around 1869. The factory was burned in the great Chicago fire of 1871 but was soon rebuilt. Peter Fahrney founded the Peter Fahrney & Sons Company. Some of his early medicines were sold out of Waynesboro PA and other nearby towns by proprietors who apparently licensed the rights.
